News dropped like a bomb in the motion design and visual effects community last Thursday, June 5th, 2025. Left Angle, a company that develops promising composition software Autograph, ended his operations overnight. The company's official website now redirects to a press release on the website of the creative software giant, Maxon, announcing the "transition" and welcoming the Left Angle team.
For users, however, the word "transition" sounded more like "desertion". Without any prior notice, Autograph authentication servers have been turned off, making the software instantly inoperable. Even those with perpetual licenses were unable to access the program, and consequently, their projects in progress.
The direct impact: A perspective on Cine Linux
We from Cine Linux, no We just reported this loss. for the community, but we feel it in the skin. Our associate producer, Movy Audiovisual, had migrated its entire motion design workflow from Adobe After Effects to Autograph about a year ago. The decision was motivated by superior stability, more agile performance and significantly lower resource consumption compared to Adobe solutions. Autograph proved to be a robust and reliable tool.
On June 5, we were surprised by the impossibility of opening the software. Five client projects, all in progress, have become hostages to a corporate decision about which we had no warning. The work was abruptly paralyzed, and now we face the arduous and costly task of resetting our entire pipeline, migrating in haste to DaVinci Resolve and Blender to try to rebuild what was lost.
In search of answers, we sent an email to Maxon support, explaining the situation:

"Our team has enthusiastically adopted Left Angle's Autograph, making it our leading motion design tool in the last year. [...] However, we were recently faced with a critical problem: Autograph is no longer operational, which we understand is due to the server shutdown after Maxon acquired. Unfortunately, this resulted in the loss of all our active projects, a total of five, which abruptly interrupted our work for our customers. [...] We are contacting to learn about the future of Autograph. Will the project continue in any way? "
UPDATE (09/06/2025): We got a response from Maxon.

After the publication of this article, we received a response from Maxon's support about our questioning about the discontinuity of Autograph and the loss of access to our projects. The answer, signed by a support manager, unfortunately confirms the worst fears of our community: a total disregard for Autograph users.
Instead of addressing any of our points, Maxon sent us the following marketing message:

The Maxon team hopes to meet you personally at some of our future events, such as OFFF Barcelona and Motion North. If you don't attend a face-to-face event, follow us on a live broadcast with a Maxon instructor.

The answer is a bucket of cold water. It not only ignores our damage, but implicitly suggests that the solution would be to migrate to your product ecosystem.
The "Official Note" and the fury of the community
The Maxon communiqué adopts an optimistic tone, celebrating the arrival of Left Angle's team to "build something new together" and "impulse the future of creative tools". Left Angle's message, in turn, thanks the community's support and states that "a new chapter begins", but fails to address the most urgent problem: the complete abandonment of its user base.
The absence of a transition plan for the clients left the community angry. In the subreddit dedicated to Left Angle, the feeling is of shock and betrayal. Users report their frustrations:
"If you will abandon all support, can you at least go to the trouble of unlocking our use of the app? I can't even start it anymore, I've invested more than 400 dollars in it over two years!!! "

" That's the most unprofessional shit I've ever seen. Imagine being in the middle of a big customer project and the software simply dissolves into the digital limbo without warning. "

The discussion quickly evolved into legal matters. One user pointed out a possible breach of contract:
"According to their EULA, you can use offline software for 45 days. After that, you need to reactivate your license through the client, which is impossible because they shut down the servers. They probably violated the contract because they were required to notify at least three months in advance. — which they didn't. So, technically, everyone with at least life license should/could sue them. "

A warning tale about modern licensing
The Autograph case is a hard reminder of the dangers of software licensing that depends on online verification. Even a "perpetual" license, for which users paid a substantial amount, proved useless when the company decided to shut down the servers.
This practice of "software as a service" (SaaS), even when disguised as a single purchase, creates a dangerous dependence and leaves total power in the hands of the developer. For the Linux community, which historically values control, ownership and transparency, this event serves as a strong argument for open source software and open file formats.
While Maxon promises to "share more in the future", the Autograph community was left behind, with its lost investments and its projects paralyzed. It is a stain on the reputation of both companies and a bitter lesson for all creative professionals who rely on proprietary software tools.
Preservation and the uncertain future
For historical preservation purposes of what was promising software, we will make available below the links to download the official installers of Autograph for Windows (studio version) and Linux (basic version .deb). We emphasize, however, that due to the shutdown of authentication servers, the software is no longer functional.
Still, if you have installers for any version of Autograph, I encourage you to email us ([email protected]) to include in the list. This isn't about piracy. — it's about archiving a discontinued tool that has exceeded the limits of modern composition. Without community efforts like this, important creative tools can disappear completely.
We will ensure that Autograph remains accessible to future motion designers, VFX artists and software historians.

Thank you to the Left team. Angle for building something really different — And good luck to them in their new chapter with Maxon.
Cine Linux will continue to follow the case and update the community if there is any response from Maxon or the old Left Angle team. For now, we can only regret the loss of a great tool and warn the community about the weaknesses of the current commercial software ecosystem.
