Maxon kills Linux support in Autograph relaunch

Last year, the Cine Linux I brought mixed news. We report the abrupt closure of Left Angle, Autograph creator, and the subsequent acquisition by giant Maxon. We saw the corporate silence and users running after refunds. Still, there was a spark of hope: Maxon would bring the tool back.

For those who do not remember, Autograph was born with the bold promise: to be the true "After Effects Killer", uniting layer-based workflow (which the market loves) with the flexibility of our system (which the VFX industry requires). He did it masterfully, without legacy codes and the main one: native Linux support.

Yesterday, Autograph actually returned. But for us penguin users, the return came with a death sentence.

Corporate treachery: Linux has been abandoned

Left Angle, despite its cloud management errors, developed Autograph natively for Linux, Windows and macOS. It was the promise of a hybrid workflow (layers and nodes) that would finally rival Adobe After Effects on our operating system.

Maxon took this multiplatform code and, in the official relaunch, simply removed Linux support. Ao check current technical specifications and installers available on Maxon platformLinux is gone. The "dream" of a pattern of Motion Graphics industry running natively on Linux, which it seemed to breatheHe was executed.

Watch the traps: The lesson of the proprietary code

We did. In June 2025, we saw licensing servers being turned off No warning.

Maxon's decision is complete proof of why We can't trust our production to proprietary tools. When you rely on closed code software linked to DRM, signatures and corporate clouds, you do not own your work tool. You're a tenant whose lease terms can be changed unilaterally.

Maxon decided that the Linux market is not worth the maintenance investment. They can change the visual identity, round the logo and use attractive emerald green tones, but corporate philosophy remains the same: profit above user sovereignty.

The elephant in the room: Adobe, Maxon and the death of competition

This strategic change raises serious questions about the Maxon vs. Adobe partnership. Maxon built the dominance of 4D Cinema largely thanks to its deep integration with After Effects (via Cineware).

Autograph is a superior technical competitor to After Effects in many respects, especially in hybrid workflow and responsive rendering. And it's interesting to kill the Linux version, because Maxon could embrace a market where Adobe has no intention of stepping on it so soon. Thus, it could even reduce the friction of competition with After Effects.

The Resistance

Autograph's dream is over, but the audiovisual production on Linux isn't.We already have powerful tools. Now, more than ever, we must support and dominate the alternatives that respect our platform.

1. Friction (Open Source / After Effects-like)

If your workflow desperately needs animation based on layers and vectors, the Friction is the alternative that deserves your attention. He's young, but he's open source and he's in active development. Supporting Friction is investing in our freedom.

2. Blender (Open Source / Composition and Animation 2D)

Blender's not just for 3D. Your resources of Composer of Us and the tools of Grease Pencil (for 2D animation) are incredibly powerful and overcome After Effects in many technical aspects. It's the open source gold standard.
